The AWW Guide to Working Remote in 2023

Remote Job Sites That are Great for Research and Finding Opportunities

With the popular rise of remote work, more remote job boards are popping up left and right. Here is a list of job boards and communities to join if you are searching for a remote job.

Remote work is the practice of employees doing their jobs from a location other than a central office operated by the employer.

Other tips we would include are:

  1. Let people know you are open to “remote work” on your LinkedIn profile headline. Share with your friends, colleagues, and people in your network that you are looking for remote opportunities. If you want something, you should throw it into the universe, tell your network, and people will think of you when an opportunity comes up like this.

  2. If you have a job already, you can request and raise your interest in turning your role hybrid or remote. Oftentimes, the option of going remote is built on trust and being communicative. If your type of work is able to be done remotely, you can propose a temporary situation where your manager can allow you to “remote work” and see how it goes. That will be your opportunity to prove that it can work.

  3. Would you even really like remote work? You can test it out working by working out in a cafe or a coworking space. While you might think you’ll enjoy remote working, have you tried it? You can create an environment for yourself to work at home and from other places—test if you’d like it first. Some people actually prefer going into office for the human and team aspect.

Things that are Important while Working Remotely

  1. Wifi is probably the most important thing you’ll need while working remotely. If you are headed to a new country, double check and confirm how fast the wifi speed is. You’ll want to find remote friendly cafes, coworking spaces, or spots that you can work out of. Disruption to your work will be difficult and unpleasant while taking video calls with colleagues, so we recommend finding the best wifi possible.

  2. Having good ergonomic work equipment is good for your personal health and posture. As we’ve seen during the pandemic, working from home has taken a toll on our bodies. Having stand up desks is nice, but not practical while traveling all the time. We recommend a few work equipment pieces down below to make sure your remote work is still good on your body.

  3. Figure out the best schedule that’ll work for you. You’ll need to adjust to a certain working style when overseas, especially if you will be traveling a lot. What is helpful is to determine when you’re most productive, as well as when you need to take meetings.

Remote Work Equipment Recommended by the Community

If you’re on-the-go a lot, finding good remote work equipment is important. Due to the constraints of luggage weight and needing to find ergonomic must-have equipment, we’ve rounded a couple of things that are great for travel and working.

Many of us work in hotel rooms, Airbnbs, and in coworking spaces. While we can’t always have the convenient desk spaces we would get at a 9-5, we can make our set up easy and pop it away when we leave for the next destination.

Here is a running list of items we’d recommend:

SOUNDANCE Laptop Stand for Desk with Stable Heavy Base, Adjustable Height Multi-Angle, Ergonomic Metal Riser Holder, Foldable Mount Elevator, Compatible with 10 to 15.6 Inches PC Computer: https://amzn.to/3k1kRWo

The laptop stand is better quality metal material, and the base of the laptop stand is heavier. More stable and sturdy than a normal laptop riser which is made of lightweight Aluminum alloy. It’s also adjustable and foldable. It’s flexible enough to make adjustments that can hold on wherever you set it to. Adjustability makes it more ergonomic. Eye-level height of your laptop keeps your neck from pain and you can fold it up when you do not need it. It’s easy to store and make your office desktop clean.

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter: https://amzn.to/3vOdkN9

This small, but mighty adapter is a necessity when traveling around the world, especially when you need to charge your devices. It covers more than 150 countries, including the US, Europe, Australia, and the UK. Note: the adapter is NOT a voltage converter, so please make sure that the devices that you will be using with our travel adapter all have dual or variable-voltage capabilities.

Apple Airpods Pro (2nd generation): https://amzn.to/3ZlvOlP

Lightweight and easy to use, the Apple Airpods are a popular favorite among many of us. It has up to 2x more active noise cancellation than the previous AirPods Pro for dramatically less noise on your commute or wherever you’re headed, or when you want to focus. The adaptive transparency lets you comfortably hear the world around you, adjusting for intense noise—like coffee shop chatter or construction noise—in real time.

How AWW Members Stay Productive and have a Balanced Lifestyle

  1. I try to be intentional about finding and scheduling substitutes for the things I miss about working in an office. Scheduling a walking call or break to make up for the walk to work or coffee walks with coworkers. Putting a standing office hour on my calendar and inviting coworkers to chat with me every Thursday at 4:00. Slacking my team a "get to know each other" question every Friday morning. Putting 5 minutes on the agenda on some meetings to make time for pre meeting chit chat. It does all feel fake at first, but taking the time to pick a few substitutes for in-person interaction and finding one that works for my team has really helped with feeling more connected to remote coworkers. - Pei Liao

  2. Within my google calendar, I schedule in self-care time, ample amount of time to eat meals slowly, decompression times between calls... This helps me prioritize myself, time to slow down, which as a result, helps me be more productive in my day! - Jennifer Au

  3. Hi, we are pretty remote whilst working in Singapore (the company is based in SG though, so not sure if we qualify as "digital nomads" per se). One tip is (if you work from home): leave your home and go for a walk after work, just to shake off the day and the "working" part from your body and mind, so you can transition back to living life. This seemed to be the only way we could disconnect from work effectively whilst wfh. I know a lot of people say the commute was best for this, but I'd rather wfh than from an office any day. And I'd much rather go for a little walk or stop by my favourite cafe after work, rather than be on a packed train home. I hope this helps. - Ka Fa
